The U.S. Embassy in Honduras told American citizens on Friday, Oct. 30, to avoid traveling through the Puerto Cortés area this weekend, after Honduran authorities reported a possible threat to bridges and port facilities there, the news agency ACAN-EFE reported in Prensa Libre.

Puerto Cortés, in Cortés department on the Caribbean coast, is the country's most important port installation, according to the report. The embassy posted its recommendation on social media and also told Americans to follow local media and the instructions of Honduran authorities.

Honduras' Security Ministry said it arrested a man as part of the investigation. The ministry said he had posted messages stating an intent to use explosives against bridges and port facilities and that he may have ties to a transnational criminal group. He will face proceedings to determine any criminal liability, the ministry said.

The report also said the FBI raised alerts about possible attacks on strategic infrastructure in Puerto Cortés. The ministry stressed its work with international partners and with the Public Ministry, Honduras' office of prosecutors.

The embassy said it continues to monitor the situation with the Security Ministry and thanked the government for its “rapid and professional response” to the threat. That wording is translated from the Spanish.

What we don't know yet: The ministry has not released the man's name or details of the operation, and it has not said whether anyone else was involved. The report does not say whether churches or ministries in the area have changed their plans. This account rests on one news agency report; Watchman News could not find the embassy's alert posted separately.
