A member of Honduras' National Congress has introduced a bill to bar public and private schools from holding Halloween activities, La Prensa reported. Deputy Dunia Jiménez of the Liberty and Refoundation party, known as Libre, presented the measure in Wednesday's session, Oct. 28.
The bill would apply at every level of the national school system. It covers parties, festivals, costume contests, recreational events and other school events tied to Halloween, and it would stop schools from using their buildings, budgets or official media to organize or publicize them. School authorities would be responsible for seeing that it is followed.
Jiménez said the aim is to strengthen students' overall education by promoting ethical and moral values as well as Christian principles, according to La Prensa.

What we don't know yet: La Prensa reported no penalties in the bill and quoted no opponents. How far the measure goes depends on the legislative process, and it has not been reported whether Congress will take it up before Halloween on Oct. 31.
