Foundation Bible Institute was founded by Dustin Henshaw, pastor of Happy Home Baptist Church and assistant principal of Cornerstone Christian Academy in Rainsville, Ala. “We were blessed to have 30 students enrolled to start our first semester,” Henshaw told the paper. The church is part of the Sand Mountain Baptist Association.

The institute offers a one-year Bible certificate, an associate's degree in Biblical studies and a bachelor's degree in Biblical studies. Classes meet once a week on Thursday nights in nine-week terms, with two classes per term. Tuition is $125 per class, including books and materials, with discounts for pastors and church staff and a $75 option to audit.

Henshaw teaches alongside James Jeffery, Glenn York and David Patty, and plans to bring in other teachers for short terms and special studies. Rex Creswell, the board's president, said many people cannot attend a seminary in person and “the cost for some is prohibitive.” The board is forming a nonprofit corporation for the school.

Students must have a high school diploma or GED, be active members of a local church and be accepted by the school. Robert Reed, a bivocational music minister enrolled this fall, said the weekly Thursday class “fits in my busy schedule.”

Henshaw said the school's mission is “to equip students to impact the world with the gospel through a biblically grounded education,” with an emphasis on evangelism, discipleship, missions and the local church.
