TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL
One Thing
Sunday, November 8, 2026
“One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.”
Psalm 27:4, KJV
On the Lord's day a great many people go to church for a dozen reasons. David had one. One thing. A divided heart is a tired heart, and most of our weariness comes from wanting too many things at once.
Look at what he wanted. Not a safer life, though the verses around it speak of enemies and war. Not an easier road. He wanted the Lord's house, not for the building but for the Presence in it. He wanted to behold the beauty of the LORD. That is a strange thing to ask for, until you have seen it. Then you know that everything else is a poor substitute.
Notice the verbs: desired, seek, dwell, behold, enquire. This is not a casual visit. It is a settled direction. Holiness is not mostly about the things we refuse. It is about the One we want so much that the lesser things lose their grip.
If you came to worship today with a long list, set it down for a moment. Ask Him for the one thing. Let Him make your desires fewer and your seeing clearer. A soul that has beheld His beauty will not be easily bribed by anything the world can offer.
Whatever the sermon is about this morning, sit under it hungry. The hungry hear what the full never notice.
