Update: More Than 80,000 Attended Assemblies of God World Congress Revival Rallies in Ghana

Organizers released new attendance figures a week after the Pentecostal fellowship's first world congress in Africa, showing the open evening rallies reached far beyond the delegates.

More than 80,000 people attended the three nights of evening revival rallies held during the 10th World Assemblies of God Congress in Ghana, organizers said in a statement marking one week since the gathering ended, the Ghanaian Times reported Oct. 23.

The figure is new since Watchman News first reported on the congress. Earlier reports put attendance at about 10,000 delegates. Organizers now say the morning sessions drew more than 10,000 participants each day, while the evening rallies drew crowds far larger.

The statement credited the congress's success to years of prayer, sacrifice, planning and preparation. “By the help of God, we prevailed!” organizers said, calling the event “a powerful demonstration of faith and God's faithfulness.”

Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama attended both the opening and closing ceremonies, the newspaper reported. Lazarus Chakwera, the former president of Malawi, stayed for the whole congress and ministered at the Global Thanksgiving Service.

The Ghanaian Times report did not say how many people made decisions for Christ during the rallies.

The congress, the first the World Assemblies of God Fellowship has held in Africa, centered on the fellowship's goal of planting one million additional churches by 2033.
